Things To Know About Hospice Care

  • You or your loved one can probably be cared for at home.
  • You can receive care for any life-limiting illness, not just cancer.
  • Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance cover the cost of your care.
  • Your needs and goals are put first – without regard for ability to pay.
  • You have a team of caregivers, including your family doctor.
  • Your hospice care includes the medications and supplies you need.

Six questions to ask yourself

  • Have you or the person you’re concerned about visited the emergency room or hospital more than once in the past 6 months?
  • Have you made more than one late-night or weekend call to the doctor?
  • Are you too ill to keep doctors’ appointments?
  • Have you stopped improving with medical treatments?
  • Are you suffering from one or more complications? (For example, pneumonia, weight loss, or skin ulcers?)
  • Do you need help to bathe, dress or eat?
